The Best Baby Bottle Ever – Dr. Brown’s Natural Flow

baby_feeding_bottlesMy wife, Lynette and I are firm believers in the benefits of breastfeeding.  With all of our kids there is a point where they can begin to be weened from their mother… part of the weening has always fallen on me in the form of being at home, alone with the all the kids, including the baby.  Can we say stress.  I have a great respect for mothers and the work they do with kids.  My wife though has one advantage over me when it comes to a fussy baby, who wants to nurse… I’m stuck without the equipment.  With each of our kids, when I was in this situation, watching the baby for their first time away from mom for more than 2 hours, (the regular nursing interval) I have turned in desperation to the cupboard to try and find some sort of bottle.  With the first this was not a problem, they were easy to find, with the second, third, and forth it took a little digging.  With our last, now ten months old, I was surprised to find a couple bottles quickly – both free samples my wife had pick up somewhere.  One of the two was different than what I had seen before… after a bit of using and examining it (remember I am a geek) I realized this thing is really cool… let me tell you why.

First of all the bottle was a small, sample size, Dr. Brown’s Natural Flow bottle.  In the past, all those bottles I had found in the cupboard had one issue, my kid would start to use it and suck on it until the nipple flipped it self into the bottle, inverted due to the constant sucking (kind of funny when it happens).  This didn’t happen with the Dr. Brown’s bottle.

At the time I first used it I didn’t care how it worked, all I knew is I needed to get some kind of liquid into this screaming kids mouth.  I quickly filled it with some water and gave it to her.  It worked – I knew since it had a few extra things to it than a lid, a nipple, and a bottle, that it was doing something to keep the air circulating into it.  It was only later that I, again I’m a geek, took the time to look at it and figure out how it worked.  Here is a diagram taken from the animation on the Dr. Brown’s site:

So, the cool thing is that the idea for this is quite simple, and it works great.  The air comes into the bottle from the sides under the cap, then down through the straw as the baby sucks the milk, juice, breast milk or whatever you put in it.  When you get yours just check it out – and if you’re a geek like me you’ll also find the beauty in it; simple and clever.

If there is a bottle to get, this is it, and it’s BPA free plastic – cool.

Nester Dad out…
